FLAT TUMMY WATER

Losing weight can be challenging but diet, exercise and self-control are the key factors. Eating fresh foods and drinking healthy drinks that do contain artificial sweeteners can help you achieve weight loss success. Naturally flavored and infused waters are a favorite when it comes to weight management. They taste deliciously good and you control the ingredients. Do you like the sound of it already?

Flat tummy water is a delicious way to stay hydrated because when you’re hydrated, you feel full and guard yourself against weight gain and also water helps flush out your toxins. Note that, flat tummy water is not a meal replacement!!! Drink it like you would regularly hydrate yourself.

In order to lose weight it is recommended to eat and drink more of the following………

·         CUCUMBER: An 8.25- inch cucumber only has 45 calories with its skin and 34 calories without its skin. They are low in calories, act as a diuretic and high in dietary in fiber and help keep the body alkaline. Nutrients provided by the cucumber also include but are not limited to vitamin C, vitamin A, iron, calcium, vitamin K and potassium. The amount of these nutrients you get from cucumber in the water depends on how much cucumber you use in the water but if you place the entire cucumber in your water, the water will still contain fewer than 50 calories.

·         GINGER: Ginger is a beneficial addition to a weight loss program aimed at reducing belly fat and obtaining a flat tummy. Belly fat accumulates for various reasons, including overeating, age- related hormone reduction, lack of exercise and stress. Consumption of ginger addresses each of these problems. Taking ginger without reducing calories or exercising won’t reduce belly fat. Ask your doctor or dietician before taking large amount of ginger, which may be contraindicated in certain medical condition.

·         LEMON: Combination of lemon and water is one that is made up of natural ingredients, are the healthiest for the human body it adds no calories to your each time you drink it, because of the pectin fiber’s presence in lemon, it has the effect of reducing your hunger. If you tried to kill your appetite in the past with such drinks like coffee or tea, try lemon in your water from now on and also get the benefit of vitamin C, enhance your beauty by rejuvenating skin from within bringing a glow to your face. And also cleanse out your colon, lemon in water effect on your hunger craving in a one – two combination in the effort to help you to reduce weight.

·         MINT: You may have thought of mint as an appetite suppressant but it is, not only will give the water a refreshing flavor it will stop food craving too. Aside from all the other health benefits of mint, it also can help in your efforts to lose weight in a healthy way. Mint is a stimulant but also stimulates the digestive enzymes that absorb nutrients from foods and consume fat and turn it into useable energy. Therefore, by adding mint to your diet or water you are increasing the amount of fat is being consumed and put to use, rather than being stored and contributing to your weight gain.

·         WATER: Water is life. It keep the body hydrated which is important because dehydration can slow down the fat burning process. It lubricates joints and muscles during exercises and helps the blood supply oxygen to muscles, water also help feel full during meals, so we don’t overeat.

Flat Tummy Water Recipe:

·         6 cups of filtered water

·         1 cucumber, Sliced

·         1 lemon, Sliced

·         1 tablespoon grated ginger

·         ½ cup of mint leaves

Suffering from constipation? Natural ways to aid bowel movements

Hi Everyone!

Today's conversation is going to be about poop! Now stop scowling your face, there's no human being that exists without pooping and the only way you stop eliminating is if you're dead.

Well so many clients usually complain to me about their lack of bowel movements in a day, whereas a healthy person ought to be eliminating at least 2 or 3 times a day. Here are a few natural ways you can help your body have a regular movement.

1. Prunes

Prunes are not only rich in antioxidants but they can actually transform your bowel. System overnight.  Prunes contain oodles of nice yummy fibre which gels up when mixed with your bodily fluids and then loosens your stool. Aside from helping constipation it can help satisfy a sweet tooth without causing a spike in your blood sugar levels.

2. Aloevera Gel

This is an excellent and effective way to curb stubborn bowel movements. The most effective way to take it is first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Aloevera gel also helps heal damage that has affected your stomach lining.

3. Apples

You can find apples at almost every street corner and in traffic so don't complain! Apples contain fiber and is also a low glycemic index fruit ie. it does not affect your blood sugar levels. The high levels of Pectin works within your body helping to bind excess toxins and flush them out.

4. Water

We all know we should aim for 8-10 glasses of water in a day. Aside from keeping us hydrated and flushing out toxins from our bodies, water helps lubricate the intestines thereby ensuring that our bowels are working the way they ought to. This ones very achievable, so people, kindly start sipping! It's for your own good!

5. Probiotics

I bet most of us have come across this word before but have no clue what probiotics do for us.....in simple terms, probiotics put back the good bacteria into our bowels. When you take antibiotics they are usually tough on the stomach lining and end up killing both our good and bad bacteria. I hear most people complain after completing a dosage of antibiotics they are unable to use the toilet. Probiotics will heal. Your guts and reform your good bacteria.

6. Hot Pepper

Yes you heard right! Eating loads of peppers fresh along with your meals will aid in having a bowel movement. Aside from containing loads of antioxidants that attack cancer cells, they tend to be spicy and irritate the stomach thereby making you seek relief by using the toilet.

So, if you are currently suffering from constipation, try out one or two of these remedies and of cos, do come back and let me know if it worked for you!

WHOLE30.....WE ARE WHAT WE EAT

So, if you have been following my blog, I am a health freak, constantly obsessed with all things health related and I have tried almost every diet that exists. And yet I have constantly been plagued by acne. . I have done cleanses, detoxes, eaten fruits mostly, taken pills, tried different skin care products all in my quest for clear skin, yet to no avail. I have even had laser peels and microdermabrasion and yet, no major change in my skin.

That was until I went on the Whole30 Journey.

The Whole 30 Plan is a 30 day program that  is designed to change your life within 30 days. During the 30 days on the Program, you regain a healthy Metabolism, reduce systematic inflammation and discover the foods that are truly impacting on your health, fitness and quality of life.

During those 30 Days, you do not consume any of the following:

NO SUGAR                                                                          NO DAIRY

NO ALCOHOL                                                                     NO WHITE TOMATOES

NO TOBACCO                                                                    NO ADDITIVES e.g. MSG

NO GRAINS                                                                        NO SCALE!!!!!!

NO BEANS

So I started the Whole 30 by buying ‘It Starts with Food” by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig and amazingly, unlike most diets I have been on, I found it quite easy to follow, despite the fact that on first glance the meals appear too limited. I could have as much yam, sweet potatoes, butternut squash and plantains as I wanted. I could also have bacon and sausages (though I gave up on looking for sausages as here in Nigeria there are a lot of strange additives in our food). I could also have a big steak, fish, salmon, chicken, snails, guinea fowl and even pork! What’s there not to like? I also got to try loads of vegetables.

Aside from how great I felt, one of the things I noticed almost immediately was that my face cleared. I mean, I who have suffered from acne since adulthood, stopped breaking out .And then the ones that existed started reducing in size and have almost disappeared. And I noticed these changes right from Day 3. Its made me realize that between the grains and dairy I gave up, I am intolerant to something that was making me inflamed and I just have to cut it off from my diet. There I was, this whole while, thinking that my acne was caused by hormonal issues!

I’m still on my Whole30 Journey and I am on Day 9 now, according to the Timeline, this is when I will start to get bored with my foods, but I intend to stick to it the whole 30 dys. I have even found a way to socialize whilst on whole30….I just have a watermelon smoothie .I am really excited about this new way of eating and intend to follow through.

Signs you're not drinking enough water

Dehydration is not necessarily to be always obvious and by the time you get thirsty, you are already dehydrated. A chronic form of dehydration which does not have the intense and sudden nature of the acute form is widespread in the present day and affects people who are not drinking enough liquid. This list of main symptoms will inspire you to go and down a glass of water and then another until you body is rehydrated.

Reduced urination
When you are sufficiently hydrated your urine seems to be a lighter yellow color, or straw, and you should urinate at least 5 times daily. If you do not drink enough water, your urine becomes dark yellow. You may go several hours, seven or more, without urinating. The lack of urine is a main sign of having no excess fluids to expel.

Urinary tract infections
If toxins contained in urine are insufficiently diluted, they damage your urinary mucous membranes causing cystitis and other urinary tract inflammation. Common symptoms such as burning pain while urinating, a strong and persistent urge to urinate often with little portions may occur.

Constipation
Infrequent bowel movements are another sign of dehydration. In the very moment chewed food enters the colon, it contains too much liquid and allows stools to form properly, and the wall of the colon reduces it. Water lubricates your digestive tract to keep things moving smoothly. In chronic dehydration, the colon takes too much water to give to other parts of the body. The lack of fluids dries fecal masses, causing it to stick to the sides of your colon and become difficult to pass.

Dry mouth
If you do not drink water, the fluids that lubricate the mucus membrane do not replenish well. As a result you feel your mouth sticky and dry with little saliva production. When your body is properly hydrated, your mouth seems to be comfortably wet and saliva production should be adequate while eating.

Lack of Tears
One more symptom of not drinking proper amounts of water is no tears when you cry. If not drinking water, the liquids in your tear ducts won’t replenish as they should do. Staying hydrated allows tears to flow plentifully

7 Habits that can lead to Belly fat

So, you’ve got yourself an absolutely gorgeous bikini to wear for a pool party two weeks from now. However, there’s a little bit of a problem – there’s no way of hiding your bulging belly fat in that skimpy swimsuit. Not sure how to trim down in order to do some justice to that awesome bikini waiting in your closet? Check out these seven habits that can cause belly fat – and be sure to do the opposite, so you can shape up and lose those unsightly bulges as fast as possible!

1. Drinking Carbonated Drinks Regularly

Can’t last a day without gulping down a can or two of soda? If this is you, then you’re certainly not being kind to your body. According to researchers, consuming one or two cans of soda daily causes your waistline to increase at least five times faster than those who barely drink soda in the course of a week. The concept behind this is that the high amount of sugar used in sodas trigger your craving for food, so you end up eating more than you should during mealtimes. Diet sodas aren’t any better than regular varieties since these contain artificial sweeteners, which can increase your appetite as much as sugar does. So if you have that serious craving for a satisfying drink, opt for healthy smoothies, fresh fruit juices, or a glass of water with lemon zest and mint leaves. You’re doing your body and overall health a favor by choosing a more nutritious drink that’s also low in sugar content. Since soda only causes you to add pounds without quenching your thirst, why bother drinking it, right?

2. Using a Larger Plate Each Time You Eat

Whether it’s a buffet dinner or just a regular meal at home, pay attention to the size of plate you use at mealtime. In a survey conducted among obese individuals, it was discovered that these people prefer larger plates over smaller or medium-sized ones. With a large plate size, they have more space for their food. So, how does this habit cause belly fat? Simple. When you have a larger space to pile up your food, you tend to consume more than your body needs, and that leads to more fat stored in your body. To avoid this nasty chain reaction, make it a point to use smaller plates and resist the urge to eat or go back for seconds when you’ve already had enough.

3. Dining Late at Night

While it’s true that your body naturally burns some flab as you sleep, it might not be able to efficiently do so when you go to bed on a full stomach. Aside from causing belly fat, eating late and reclining on a full stomach increases your risk of developing acid reflux and indigestion, since gravity is no longer able to pull everything in your tummy straight down. To prevent these conditions, consider eating smaller meals at night and don’t lie down for at least three hours after dinner. If possible, just snack on fruits in case you feel a bit hungry at night instead of raiding the fridge for sweet desserts to satisfy your craving.

4. Eating When Sad, Angry or Upset

Do you find yourself eating absent-mindedly when your emotions are at their peak? The next time you catch yourself doing this, try to snap out of it before you end up eating a double cheeseburger and fries. Emotional eating does nothing to make you feel better. If there’s anything you can get from this habit of eating whenever you’re upset or stressed out, it’s just hideous belly fat. The best way to combat this response to stress is by drinking a glass of water, talking to a friend, or taking a relaxing walk. Choose an activity that doesn’t involve eating, so you can stop yourself from loading up on extra calories when you’re feeling emotional.

5. Consuming Low-Fat Foods More Often

Some people assume that high-fat foods and drinks lead to more fat storage in your belly. The truth is, monounsaturated fats are not bad for you. If anything, foods such as avocados, olive oil and seeds work well in eliminating belly fat. Be wary of too many low-fat foods, since manufacturers often add sugar to these items. And you know what that means – the more sugar you have in the body, the greater your chances of storing more body fat.

6. Depriving Yourself of Sleep

Ideally, adults should get about seven to nine hours of sleep each night. When you fail to get enough sleep, your level of cortisol (stress hormone) increases and causes you to crave sugary foods. With that in mind, it’s harder to get rid of belly fat when you keep the habit of not getting enough sleep regularly. To maintain normal levels of the stress hormone cortisol, try your best to attain the recommended hours of sleep every night. This way you can balance your cortisol levels while boosting production of leptin, a type of hormone that causes you to control your appetite.

7. Not Getting Enough Protein in Your Regular Diet

Have you been depriving your body of protein-rich foods? Generally, healthy adults should consume at least 20 to 25 grams of protein in each meal, although this depends on your activity level and body size. Men in particular should get an additional 10 grams of protein with every meal to ensure excellent health. By increasing your protein intake, you can balance out your blood sugar while reducing insulin levels to promote a faster metabolic rate. What’s more, protein helps control hormones that increase your appetite, so you can slim down naturally. To power up your daily meals, consider eating high-protein foods such as ricotta cheese, shellfish, turkey, skinless chicken, salmon and eggs. These are your best options because of their low fat and high protein content – a great combination for slimming down and shaping up!

So are you ready to say hello to a flatter tummy and a more gorgeous body? Just be sure to avoid these seven bad eating habits, and you can be on your way to improving your body size and overall health.

Foods for Perfect skin!

If you’re a regular on my blog, you’ll know that despite my being very vain (lol) I also suffer from acne( all of my adult years since I turned 21). Even though I try to follow a products regime for my skin to be clear, what I eat also helps as some foods can aggravate your acne, whilst some enhance your skin. Here's a list of foods that can lead to clear skin -

RED BELL PEPPERS

one red bell pepper actually contains more than 100% of our daily vitamin C requirement. It also contains dietary fiber and vitamin B6. Carotenoids in it helps prevents wrinkles and aids blood circulation, ensuring our skin looks like youthful. It’s also about 30 calories which is low.
DARK CHOCOLATE

I love chocolate but they are fattening so go easy on this! Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants, fatty acids and flavonoids that promote glowing skin. The antioxidants in it reduces roughness of the skin and protects it against sun damages. Cocoa also relaxes arteries thereby increasing blood circulation, which of course leads to healthier skin

SALMON

I love me some sea food! Salmon is an excellent food that produces our daily vitamin D needs. Vitamin D is responsible for keeping our heart, bones, colon and brain healthy. It also prevents colon cancer, anxiety, stress, depression, heart and bone diseases. So how’s it good for the skin? Well, it contains Omega- 3 fatty acids which are excellent for fighting inflammation, wrinkle and acne. It also hydrates your skin. If you however can’t lay your hands on salmon due to cost factor or even scarcity, try good old mackerel!

COCONUT OIL

Aside from using this on my hair, coconut oil is one of the richest sources of saturated fat. It contains lauric acid which is a powerful antibacterial and antiviral agent protecting us from viruses, infections, inflammation and acne! It’s also rich in essential fatty acids and vitamin C and therefore perfect for keeping skin moist, soft and wrinkle free.
GREEN TEA

I know it’s a beverage but it’s a great source of antioxidants and contain L – theanine which helps relax us and lowers stress. When brewed hot, it releases catechins which is a antioxidants which has anti-cancer and anti- inflammatory properties. Drink for 3 cups a day to see results.

SPINACH
Yea! Spinach always reminds me of Popeye the sailor, who gulps large cans of spinach for energy...its however one of my nastiest veggies as I do not like the smell or its taste. But for the sake of my skin, I do eat spinach once in a while. Its nutritionally rich and contains iron, folate, chlorophyll, vitamin E, magnesium, vitamin A, fiber, plant protein and vitamin C.

PAW PAW(papaya)

asides from being low in calories( 39 calories per 100g) it has no cholesterol. Aside from weight matters, it’s a beauty food low in fructose and is excellent for digestion. The antioxidant nutrients in it like vitamin C, vita. E, beta carotenes are great at reducing inflammation and acne.

CARROTS

Yummy, delicious carrots are great for the eyes. They are also good for the skin. They help clear breakout. Vitamin A in it helps prevents the overproduction of cells in the outer layer of the skin which is where excess sebum combines with dead cells and cloys pores. Vitamin A also reduces the development of skin cancer cells. Whilst eating these foods. Remember to avoid junk foods too much sugar, trans fats and refined carbs for the beast skin possible.

OVARIAN CANCER- Vital facts!

·         Its not a SILENT KILLER.

Years ago, ovarian cancer was regarded as a silent killer, it was rare and its symptoms were relatively vague. You should see a doctor to rule it out if you suffer from – persistent tummy pain, feeling unreasonably full after eating, bloating, bladder and bowel symptoms such as IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and recurrent cystitis/

·         It’s a sign of the Times

Ovarian cancer would have been rare in primitive times where most women were almost continually pregnant and hardly menstruated. With shorter lifespans, they would have not outlived their reproductive years. These days women can live up to half of their lives post menopausally with the risk of the disease increasing at this time.

·         Hormones Trigger Symptoms

An enlarged lower abdomen or pressing sensations in the bladder and bowel do not mean you have a huge tumor….

·         There are blood tests you can take for early detection

You can take a blood test to detect if the Protein CA 125, which women have naturally is raised as this can suggest ovarian cancer. It’s however only an indicator, as pregnancy and conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids and benign cyts can also increase the levels CA125.

·         It is regarded as an Older woman’s cancer

Although it can occur from 20 upwards, most cases are in women aged 40 plus, with the majority in over 70’s.

·         It is regarded as Nuns Caner

Nuns typically went through life without pregnancies and so may have had around 500 ovulations in their reproductive life – the number of ovulations you have the greater the impact on your risk of the disease.

·         The Pill can cut your risk

Taking the pill can help prevent ovarian cancer as it halts ovulation and reduces the risk. Sterilisation also reduces the risk.

·         Infertility increases the risk

·         Unlike other cancers where smoking and drinking alcohol play a clear role, the main lifestyle factor in ovarian cancer is weight; women with a BMI of 30 or more are at a greater risk than women with a healthy bmi.

I'M IN LOVE WITH HENNA!

My newest hair fad is henna for dying my hair. The last time I visited Savy chic hub, Dabs of naijahaircangrow was raving about the many benefits of using henna on her hair. I made a mental note to try henna soonest on my hair so upon returning from my trip, I got some henna in the form of Nupur which is a blend of 100% natural henna and 9 natural herbs – Brahmi, shikakai, aloe vera, methi, bhringraj, amla, neem, hibiscus and jatamansi (truthfully I have never heard of some of these herbs).

Naturally being my hair ocd self, I can never use anything on my hair without some research and I read some rave reviews of henna. The most important being –

·         You need to know what you want from your treatment….are you seeking to just strengthen your hair without color. Use cassia obovata which is popularly referred to as ‘neutral henna’…seeking to lighten your strands and have a red tone? Use red henna, which is the original henna…..trying to darken your hair color cos you are in love with black hair? Advisable to use ‘indigo henna’.

·         Henna is not a permament hair dye….yea the color will last but it needs regular coloring as shampooing, swimming, blow drying all cause degradation of your color, though it will never turn brassy or bronze like your ammonia filled hair dyes.

·         Henna strengthens your hair strands, almost like a protein treatment and this can lead to dry and brittle strands, so always follow up each treatment with a moisturizing deep conditioning treatment.

·         Ensure you use 100% henna of body art quality. A lot of brands claim to be natural henna and will usually claim you can lighten to ‘light blonde’, ash brown’ ‘chestnut brown’ etc….these are not natural henna as the only color you will get from henna is red. These brands usually contain metallic compounds and / or salts which can damage your hair, so be cautious!

Now, what are the benefits of using a henna treatment?

·         It helps thicken your hair as it provides a double coating to your strands and aids in preventing thinning and hair loss.

·         It is a healthy way to color your hair without the damage that comes along with using hair dyes that typically contain ammonia and hydrogen peroxides

·         You can use henna as a great conditioner that helps maintain the quality of your hair

·         It helps strengthen your hair thereby making it resilient to damage and breakage.

·         It is antifungal so can help prevent dandruff

How do I use my henna?

Well, I followed my package instructions which was to mix my henna with water and/or oil and soak for about 4-6 hours ( I used Olive oil). I used a whisk to mix it properly.

I prepooed with a mix of crème of nature argan oil intensive therapy conditioner and amla oil and detangled after an hour under my shower cap. Then washed my hair as I normally do with Aubrey organics honeysuckle moisturizing shampoo. I put in the treatment first using a brush but decided I preferred my fingers ( I should state here that it’s advisable to use the henna when naked in your bathroom as its very messy and henna can stain your clothes). I wrapped it with my cling film and tied a scarf tightly to secure it in place. I had a bath afterwards and then went to bed.
Next morning I rinsed it out with water pouring loads of water to rinse and then I used my   vo5 moisture deep conditioner to cowash my hair to wash out the henna completely. I then deep conditioned with my baby sitrinillah. I don’t think I can explain with words how moisturized and yet strong my hair felt. I had my fingers in my hair all day long, lovingly playing with my new growth as I’m 9 weeks post relaxer. I intend to use henna on my hair monthly henceforth
